Gretchen Whitmer backs Joe Biden on alleged assault: 'not every claim is equal'
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden faces a sexual assault allegation against him by a former employee. Tara Reade, who worked for the former US vice-president nearly 30 years ago, says he sexually assaulted her in the halls of Congress. Mr Biden has been accused of being "touchy feely" by multiple women, but this is the first public accusation of serious sexual misconduct against him. The White House hopeful has denied the allegations.
Biden categorically denies all of Reade's allegations. Reade is an American domestic-violence advocate and lawyer. She states that she suffered emotional and violent physical abuse from both her father and her ex-husband, which in turn motivated her to work on behalf of victims. Reade has misrepresented herself and her life experiences on numerous occasions, including lying under oath and in court proceedings. Specifically, she has lied about holding a bachelor's degree from Antioch University , invented a secret "fast-track" bachelor's program at Antioch from which she supposedly earned her degree, and falsely stated that she served as a visiting professor at Antioch. She misrepresented her educational background in her law school applications, allowing her to attend law school without the required bachelor's degree. In addition, Reade is currently under criminal investigation by prosecutors in Monterey County, California, for lying under oath about her educational credentials, in her appearances as an expert witness on domestic abuse. Prior to accusing him of sexual assault in , Reade made various other comments that cast her encounters with Biden in a different light. Reade says that in , she filed a complaint against Biden with a Senate human resources office in which she alleged that Biden had made Reade feel uncomfortable through comments she deemed demeaning, allegedly including a compliment about her looks and a request for Reade to serve drinks at a Senate event. However, Reade said that in her complaint she did not specifically accuse Biden of any kind of sexual misconduct and made no mention of the alleged assault.
