A record-breaking number of votes 3. This was the first Hottest countdown to reach 3 million votes. American singer-songwriter Billie Eilish was voted into first place with her single " Bad Guy ".

The Triple J Hottest is an annual music listener poll hosted by the publicly-funded, national Australian radio station, Triple J. The public is invited to vote for their favourite Australian and alternative music of the year, in an online poll conducted two weeks prior to the new year. The poll has grown from , votes in to over 3. The idea for the poll came from Triple J producer Lawrie Zion in late For the Hot , before Triple J had become a national broadcaster, Sydney listeners were required to write their 10 favourite tracks on the back of an envelope. The station repeated the event the following year when it started broadcasting to other capital cities besides Sydney. In , Triple J was forced to change the poll's name to 'Hottest ' to avoid legal action with 4zzz. During the poll's first few years — from to — the winner in the first two years was " Love Will Tear Us Apart " by Joy Division ,  while 's favourite song was " Smells Like Teen Spirit " by Nirvana ,  which had been released that year.

Pop sensation Billie Eilish is the first solo female artist to ever top the Hottest , after her hit Bad Guy came in at number one on Triple J's annual countdown. At 18, she's also the youngest artist to lead the list. Australian artists nabbed eight of the top 10 spots but the US star beat out local contenders including Flume and Vera Blue's Rushing Back and Mallrat's Charlie to top the list.
